In the article "Stop Treating Students like Criminal" Ron Crickenberger states that it is degrading and unconstitutional to make students urinate in a cup to prove that their school are drug free. In fact, even if there's no evidence that they've ever used illegal drugs they would still be submitted to a mandatory drug test.  This action invades the rights of students and makes them feel like criminals. School is supposed to be a friendly and safe environment. Although it may feel like a violation of personal space,   random mandatory drug testing would enforce a drug -free life.
Granted, the fact that students would undergo mandatory drug testing would decrease drug usage.  Confiedentialy should also take part in this drug testing procedure to ensure the fairness of student or being bullied by other. Drug testing would give students a warning signal in life that drug use has consequences.  It would also enforce routine drug testing that would be required later in life by their work. It would open doors for life opportunities as they have learned to live a drug free life. It would also be beneficial to parents who are always working to keep track of their kids. They would find out if their kids are consuming or using drugs.
On the other hand, proper measures and proper personal would be essential for this type of requirement since it is a delicate issue. School officials should keep in mind not to violate students’ rights or stereo type student because of what they wear. Also, if tested positive students shouldn’t be send to juvenile hall. For then we would be creating criminal in the school system instead of professional citizens. Department of Social Services shouldn't be able to take kids away from their parents do to this drug testing in first time offence. Schools should write out a contract explaining the consequences if tested positive. Students are not criminals and should not be treated as such to be precise. Even criminals get a second chance in life. For this type of drastic measure schools should offer orientation to explain students’ right as well as parental rights in this matter. Schools should also have parents sign and keep a copy of the school contract so they can be revised in case of an offense against drug use.
The more I think about it, it scares me to think of how the school system can manipulate the life of working parents who have variable work schedules and trust that their kids are doing the right thing. Not only your child would be treated as a criminal and convey the risk of being taken out of your home, but you as a parent would suffer the consequences. In order for this idea to work it would be precise to have an idiot proof contract for parent by the schools. As well, written out procedures in case a student has being found positive during a drug test. Extreme measures of police being called and child protective services taking away your children because of a positive test should be unnecessary. More like counseling and a contract made by the student school committee and parents should be a perfect approach. Because all this elements are in effect, I applaud random drug testing school. I would like my child to live a drug free life as well as getting the proper tools needed by the school system to become a productive citizen in life.
